What changes the price, and what never does

Most people asking what a chauffeur costs have been quoted a number by someone else and found it was not the number they paid. So it is worth being plain about the four things that move a Crest fare, and the list of things that cannot.

The four things that change it

• Where you start. Heathrow is £80 from west London and £115 from central London. The same is true of London City: £65 from Canary Wharf, £90 from central London.
• Distance beyond the fixed-price zone. Outside the zone the fare starts at £45 and adds £3.50 per mile. You still get one fixed figure before you book.
• The time of day. Pickups between 23:00 and 06:00 carry a 20% night rate. A 04:00 run to Gatwick is £180 rather than £150, and you are told that before you agree to it.
• Transfer, hourly or day hire. A single airport transfer is a fixed fare. Waiting between meetings is £55 an hour with a three-hour minimum, or £250 for five hours and £400 for ten.

What is already in the price

• Meet and greet with a name board at arrivals
• Flight tracking, with the pickup moved automatically and no extra charge for standard delays
• 60 minutes' free waiting on airport pickups
• Luggage assistance, bottled water, phone chargers and a silent cabin
• The fixed price, agreed in writing before you travel

What you will never be charged

• No meter and no surge pricing, whatever the traffic or the hour
• No waiting-time meter inside your free hour
• No deposit and no card held on file
• Nothing added after the journey

Worked examples

Six journeys people actually book, priced by the rules above so you can check the arithmetic yourself.

• Ealing to Heathrow Terminal 5, 09:00 — £80. West London fixed fare, meet and greet and flight tracking included.
• Mayfair to Heathrow Terminal 2, 06:30 — £115. Central London fixed fare, outside the night window.
• Kensington to Gatwick, 04:00 — £180. The £150 fixed fare plus the 20% night rate.
• Canary Wharf to London City Airport, 14:00 — £65.
• Three hours of meetings around the City — £165. Three hours at £55, the minimum booking.
• A full day, 10 hours, car and chauffeur held — £400.
